Aviagen Latin America Shares Valuable Insights at OVUM 2024

Aviagen at OVUMCAMPINAS, Brazil – Aviagen® Latin America’s sales and customer service teams from Argentina, Brazil, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean (CAME), Colombia, Peru, and other South American countries gathered to exchange knowledge and strengthen connections at the 23rd Latin American Poultry Congress (OVUM). This bi-annual event took place in Punta del Este, Uruguay, from Nov. 12-15.

Demonstrating a commitment to “Breeding success together,” Aviagen met with customers to discuss how the Ross® 308 AP breed can help meet the region’s growing demand for sustainable, nutritious protein. Aviagen specialists shared insights on vital areas of poultry production to empower Latin American producers.

Grain availability in a changing environment

Consultant Paul Aho provided an overview of global grain availability, noting favorable conditions expected over the next 6-12 months, though market shifts could occur due to factors like tariffs, climate change, and geopolitical issues.

Early broiler management

Aviagen’s Technical Services Manager for Aviagen South America Excluding Brazil (SAEB) Santiago Lovera highlighted how effective management during the first week of a broiler’s life is key to its long-term growth and overall flock performance. “Giving chicks the best start optimizes growth, feed conversion, and meat quality,” he said.

Impact of genetic sustainability improvement

Santiago Avendaño, Aviagen’s Global VP of R&D and a native Uruguayan, discussed how genetic improvements are making poultry production more sustainable by reducing feed costs and carbon emissions. He emphasized that advancements in feed conversion efficiency are reducing the industry’s carbon footprint both regionally and globally. Avendaño also shared insights into the impact of different soya sources on the carbon footprint and discussed emerging animal welfare trends in Europe that require an expanded portfolio of genotypes to satisfy customer requirements. Finally, he presented the environmental impact of different animal and plant-based food sources in fulfilling daily essential amino acid requirements, highlighting the advantageous position of poultry meat.
